Oveson Family

Isn’t it about…time?

Preston’s said a couple of things lately that I found wise…

1.  “Mom!  We just finished doing chores and now you want us to do more work!?  It seems like as soon as I finish some work there’s just more work to do!”  I feel the same the way, Pres, I feel the same way!

2.  While playing….  “Zach, you can’t quit before the battle even starts!  Just because it’s going to be hard doesn’t mean you have to quit!  You just have to battle harder!”  Boy, don’t we all need that advice when the going gets tough?

Cousin adventure snuck up on us this week, and we didn’t really have a plan for it.  So Zach suggested that we have a video game day with our cousins.  So, we headed to the Staten’s where they played video games and we finger painted (and toe painted) with pudding.

While we were there Matt was showing off the bow he had bought that week, which reminded me that there were in the middle of the archery world cup right now up at Weber State.  So, we loaded all the boys up and took off the check it out.  After watching it in the super hot sun for a while the boys decided that archery is really fun to do, but not so much fun to watch. :>  So, we checked out some cool bows, bought some much needed water, and headed for home.  It was kind of a random adventure, but an adventure nonetheless! I forgot to bring my camera, so the pictures are courtesy of Liz.  But that’s probably good that I had to steal them from Liz because if they were mine they would probably be on our dead computer and I’d have no pics to put up!

For this week’s cousin adventure we took the boys out to Antelope Island.  I hadn’t been there since my dad took us when I was in High School, and I was excited to go (though I was not so excited about going in the extreme heat).  All morning while we were getting ready, Kyle walked around saying, “My go play in water?”  All three of them were so excited to go!!

First we stopped at the visitors, and right as we got out of the van there was a buffalo standing in the field next to the parking lot.  The boys thought that was AWESOME!  It was funny though – my boys have been to Yellowstone so many times that as soon as they saw the buffalo Zach and Preston started saying they wanted to go back to Yellowstone.  That’s what a buffalo is to them… just a part of Yellowstone. Between that and the giant spiders all around the visitor’s center, the boys were fascinated!

Anyway, after the visitors center we decided to start the day out with a hike before it got too hot (though it was toasty enough already)!  The ranger had suggested the Buffalo Peak Hike.  It was only about a mile (though parts were a bit steep for the little ones), so we figured it would be good for the little boys.  The only problem was that as I was rushing around getting the boys dressed that morning all I was thinking about was the beach.  So, all four of us Ovesons had our feet clad in flip flops.  Not the best hiking shoes.  But, it didn’t seem to slow the boys down!  The older boys raced to the top while Liz and I made it up the hill at a 2 year old pace.  Kyle kept seeing Nick being carried on Liz’s shoulders, so then he would say, “My ride on your shoulders.”   But then after a minute he would say, “My do it myself” and want to walk.  Needless to say, it took us awhile to make it to the top of the hill.  At the top we found a boy’s paradise!  It was covered with all sorts of giant rock formations for the boys to “rock climb” on.  They had such a blast climbing the rocks and jumping from rock to rock.  One of Zach and Preston’s favorite things to do is to “rock climb” as they call it.  And Nick and Kyle were right there with all the big boys climbing all over.  “My do it!!”  was Kyle’s motto each time I tried to hold his hand or help him.  Stubborn boy!  Now remember, we were all in flip flops.  So Kyle’s flip flops were constantly falling off as he was climbing, and then he would scream until we found it.  Oh, two year olds!!  :>   But all in all it was a very fun hike!  And what a view we had from the top!  Awesome!

After the hike everyone was tired, HOT, thirsty, and did I mention HOT?!?  So we decided to head to the beach to play.  That walk from the parking lot to the beach through the hot sand burned our feet and seemed to take forever with all the little ones, but we finally made it.  Zach had run ahead of all of us to the beach, but quickly came running back to warn us that we can’t go to this beach because it’s COVERED in flies!  He’s said, “It’s like a solid wall of flies, and there’s no way through them!”  Luckily, Uncle Mike had joined us by now, and he showed the boys how if you walk toward the flies they move out of your way in a big wave.  So then they thought it was pretty cool, and decided we could stay.  Originally we had planned on eating lunch down there, but everything you put down for even a second is covered in brine flies, and the smell leaves something to be desired, so the boys decided they could wait for lunch, and they headed out to the water.

The look on Zach’s face here says it all.  Picnicing here was not a great idea!

And Preston took his flip flops off and within minutes they were swarming with flies.  EVERYTHING was covered in flies!

One nice thing about the Great Salt Lake is that the beach is awful, but once you get to the water there are no more flies and it’s quite enjoyable!  The other nice thing about the Great Salt Lake is that you can go out super far and it’s still very shallow, so it made a nice place for the little boys to play.  The big boys immediately headed out to practice floating with Uncle Mike.

Unfortunately, shortly after they got out there Preston went under and got a mouth full of water…  SUPER GROSS WATER!  It took awhile for him to calm down and decide to go out and try again, but eventually he did and he had a great time.

This is what a mouth full of salt water looks like!

Kyle was so excited to “go swimming” and was having a blast until he too went under.  I was taking a picture of the Staten’s and saw out of the corner of my eye that Kyle was floating face down in the water and flailing like crazy!  Because he was so buoyant he couldn’t get his feet under him!  Scared me to death, but we got to him and all was well.  But then it took awhile for him to calm down and want to play more too.  **sigh**

Kyle… swimming out to sea!

He decided playing in the sand was much easier!

Eventually everyone had a great time at the same time!  Zach loved the whole thing and could have floated out there for hours!  He’s such a water rat!!!  Both he and Pres had fun catching brine shrimp with their cousins.  Uncle Mike even paid Matt $1 to eat a pair of mating brine shrimp, and he actually did it!  Yuck!!  Boys!

Soon Kyle, Isaac, Lucas, and Nick decided they liked the sand better than the lake!  But the big boys stayed out and floated until the end!

Eventually Kyle was past the point of needing a nap, so we decided to head home.  The saddest part of the day for Zach was when he lost his special ring on the way back.  He had actually lost it in the water once, but Uncle Mike found it for him.  Unfortunately, when he realized he lost it in all that sand there was no way to find it.  He was pretty bummed.

Preston the “sandman”

After showering all the caked on salt off our bodies, I loaded up 3 exhausted kids and 1 exhausted mom and headed for home!  The boys had had WAY too much sun, and all 3 were pretty sun burnt.  The night we had quite the scare with Preston.  He had thrown up in his sleep because of having too much sun, but he didn’t wake up in time and he aspirated some of the throw up into his lungs.  I was already asleep, but luckily Mike was still awake doing homework and heard him.  As soon as he got upstairs I woke up and rushed out.   I had pretty bad asthma growing up, but I have NEVER, EVER seen someone not be able to breathe like that.  It was extreme.  I’m not usually a “freak out mom,” in fact sometimes I’m too calm, but I was starting to really worry!  I was trying to figure out how long it would take to get to the hospital, and I was really worried that we wouldn’t have enough time to get him there because he was really not getting much air in at all.  It was so scary!  I grabbed an inhaler that I had too see if it would help at all, and Mike gave him a quick blessing, and luckily he finally started to breathe a bit better.  As soon as he started to get a bit more air in he fell asleep in my arms, and I took him to our bed to sleep with us.  I was still pretty freaked out, and didn’t want him too far away.  He still wheezed way bad all night, which means I was awake listening to him breathe all night, but at least he was getting some air in!  By the afternoon of the next day he  was no longer wheezing and coughing and all was well.  Thank goodness for the priesthood!

Most people head to Sun Valley Idaho for a nice relaxing getaway.  Unfortunately we’re not “most people.”  We go to Sun Valley to work 15 hour days and just about kill ourselves with exhaustion.   Last week was nutty…  Monday was Alie’s wedding, Tuesday was our anniversary, and Wednesday we headed up to Sun Valley to shoot photos and video at a 4 day ice skating competition. Sigh… I need down time.  And poor Mike – this is the last week of classes (and he has 20 hours). Plus he’s trying to balance work at the OECC and seminary while not dropping the ball as bishop or with the family.  Poor guy is exhausted beyond belief.  Anyway, back to Sun Valley…  Every time I mention to someone that we are going to shoot ice skating for the wee they always think it sounds so fun and glamorous.  I don’t know that I would classify it as fun, but there are good parts.  It’s fun to meet so many different people.  Even though we get to the rink at 6 am and leave at 9 pm and we don’t really see each other the whole time we are there, at least we are there together.  And we’re grateful for the opportunity to work and earn a little extra money for our family.  So there are positives to the nuttiness.

The cool thing about Sun Valley is that they have an outdoor rink that they use all year long.  And on Sunday they skate the showcases on the outdoor rink. It’s awesome!

Another thing that is cool (literally) is that I get to shoot the podium/award shots outside as well.  This is great after about noon.  Unfortunately, the morning temperatures start at about 40 degrees and I FREEZE until about noon (thus the outdoor rink can survive).  After noon it’s very pleasant!

This trip was really hard for me to leave my kids.  I felt way home sick and had a hard time talking to them on the phone without crying.  I just wanted to be home with them.  But they on the other hand had a great time – which I am very grateful for.  Tuesday night while they were at the Statens they got to go to the rodeo with them.  Thursday they went to the aquarium with Grandma Oveson.  Friday they went to the planetarium with Grandma Oveson, and then to the movie Despicable Me with Grandma and Grandpa Wittke that night.  Saturday they went to MacDonalds, a birthday party, and fireworks with Grandma and Grandpa Wittke.  Sunday they had a great day at church with G & G Wittke, and then we came to get them Monday morning.  They had an awesome vacation!  I’m so grateful to everyone that helped with my kids and made this week a great time for them.  They loved every minute of it!  And now I’m so glad to be back home together!!  Here are a couple pics I stole from Liz from when they went to the Rodeo (which btw was the cousin adventure for this week).  Looks so fun!

I think Ky was a bit tired!

4 boys + 1 snowcone = pure bliss

Last Tuesday, July 20, 2010, was a very momentous occasion for our family.  It marked the 10 year anniversary of the day our family officially began!

Mike and I were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity on July 20, 2000.  I felt so emotional going into this anniversary.   I just feel so fortunate and extremely blessed to be married to such a wonderfully, amazing man.  I just love him so much!  And I was so emotional thinking about how 10 years ago it was just the two of us starting out on this crazy adventure, and now we have grown to five!!  It’s such a blessing to have each other and be parents together!  And I just love him so much more now than I did 10 years ago.  It’s amazing how love grows and develops with each passing day and each mountain and valley you go through together.  I have learned so much about him and about myself, and seen each of us grow individually and together as we’ve faced challenges and risen above them together.  I think we make a pretty great team, and I wouldn’t want to imagine life without him by my side!   Marrying him was the best decision I ever made!  I can’t wait for a million more decades together!

For our anniversary we spent the morning just like any other morning.  Mike had seminary stuff to be to, and I took the boys to see Indian in the Cupboard.  We’ve read the series to them, and they were showing it as one of the summer movies.  So we just had to go.  After that we ran around town getting stuff ready for my gift to Mike.  When I got home Mike was there and had this surprise waiting for me:

Mike had etched 10 things he loves about me into tin foil, and left flowers and even baked cookies.  Why tin foil you ask?  Well, the traditional wedding gift for 10 years is tin.  Cute, huh?

And I guess we were thinking along the same lines because my gift also revolved around 10 things I love about him.  I made a list and then got a small gift to go with each of the ten things.  My tin came in the form of metal slurpee straws!

Here was my list:

10 reasons I love you on our 10 year anniversary

  1. No matter how tough things can get you always make me smile and you make me laugh every day.
  2. I love how you love to have fun together and with our family.
  3. You have a strong commitment to the Lord, and a strong desire to follow him in all things.
  4. You show unending love for me, and you are always committed to making our relationship the best it can be.
  5. You have a drive to always be good and to improve and be the best that you can be.
  6. You love our boys and are such a great dad to them.
  7. You are always so kind and sweet to me.
  8. You work so extra hard for our family.
  9. You are always willing to help me with anything I need.  You take good care of me.

10.  I love the look in your eyes when you look at me with love.

Then we made the boys sit down and watch ‘The greatest movie ever made” with us… a.k.a. our wedding video.  It was so fun to look back on that wonderful day and remember how happy and in love and excited we were.  So awesome!!  Then we took the kids to the Staten’s to spend the night and we went down to Salt Lake to spend the night at the Armstrong Mansion.  We’d never been there before, but we totally loved it!  It had such a nice atmosphere!  We stayed in the the July room, and it had an Americana theme, and an awesome tub! We loved it!  After checking in, we went to dinner at Ruth’s Diner up Emigration Canyon, which has been a favorite spot of our since high school.  It was so much fun!!  We have phone pics from dinner that I’ll put on if I can ever figure out how to get them off the phone!

The next morning we left, got the kids from Liz’s and took them down to Mike’s mom’s house because they were staying with her while we left for an ice skating shoot in Sun Valley.  Then we went to the Salt Lake Temple to do sealings.  This was probably my favorite part of the anniversary celebrations.  I just love the Salt Lake Temple!  There’s just something about those old pioneer temples that’s just amazing to be in!  We started doing sealings with a group that was sealing sons to parents.  We thought that was neat since all we have is sons.  Then we got to just sit in the celestial room and enjoy the amazing spirit that is there.  It reminded me of right before we got married and they let us sit in the celestial room together before going into the sealing.  I remember being so excited and so incredibly happy!!!  After sitting there for awhile, we went with a small group into one of the original sealing rooms off of the celestial room to do some couple sealings.  It was all just amazing!  I’m so glad we had time to go there together and remember the amazing covenants and blessings that we experienced 10 years ago for ourselves!  It was extraordinary!!

After leaving there we ate lunch at Olive Garden, I got a tour of Mike’s seminary (btw – he’ll be teaching at North Ridge High in Layton next year), and then we headed up to Sun Valley.  All in all it was an absolutely wonderful 10 year anniversary!  I loved just being with Mike and reflecting on our marriage, our family, our love, and the life we share!  Here’s to an eternity together!!!!!

Last Monday, July 19th, my sweet cousin Alie got married to Nick Cooper!!  It was such a great wedding, and they both looked so happy and in love!  As you can see in the picture below, Mike officiated at the wedding.  It’s such a blessing at times like this to be a bishop and be able to have that privilege!  I think he was a bit nervous, but he did great!  He even told his famous jack story!  He was also multi-tasking and doing the video for the wedding, so I had to help run the camera during the ceremony.  Zach and Preston got to help the Staten boys take gifts, and they felt pretty important to have such a job .  Overall it was a great night!  It was so great to be among family and to see my “baby cousin” look so happy!  Look at that cute bishop!

Glade…. love the socks!

Grandma, Aunt Mandy, Aunt Marci, and the cousins: Aidan, Jared, Ben, & Lily, came up last Monday and we had a cousin adventure with the Oveson cousins at the splash pad in South Ogden.  The boys sure love playing with their cousins – they had a blast!  Jared and Zach are little water rats and can’t get enough of it!  Preston and Aidan love it too, but enjoyed the playground as well.  Ben and Kyle, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with the water.  And Lily?  She just sat around being cute!  It was a fun morning!

Kyle is in that stage right now where he loves to help with anything and everything you are doing.  It’s so cute!  Every time we are doing something he runs up, “What doing, Dad?  What doing here?”  He always wants to be involed in everything and help!  Here’s just a couple examples:

  • He holds doors open for people when they walk in a building, and always calls himself a “gentleman.”
  • He loves to help me cook, and runs in the kitchen saying, “My help!!”
  • Every time I start the vacuum or Mike starts the lawn mower he runs to grab him lawn mower and vacuums and mows right along side us.
  • When Nick was staying with us he kept wanting to help with Nick’s diaper changes.  Each time I would go to change Nick he would grab a wipe and say, “My change Nick’s diaper.”
  • He’s convinced he can drive the car all by himself.  When we are going somewhere he often can be heard to say, “My have the keys?  My drive the car?”
  • He helps me make my bed every morning.
  • When I clean the bathroom or glass he has to have a squirt bottle full of water to clean right along side me.
  • He loves to help feed the animals and water the plants with his brothers.
  • He is constantly gathering up the shoes by the front door and bringing them to the right owners so they can put them on.
  • He helps Dad work on the car and fix the bikes.
  • He loves to set the table, and will start to dish food out on people’s plates if we aren’t there yet.
  • Each time I give him a snack he is certain to say “One for Pressy/Zach too?”
  • He loves to “weed.”  I’ve lost several plants this way! :>

The list could go on, and on, and on!  I just love it!  There are times that I think that it would be so much easier to do it without all that 2 year old help, but then I watch him and my heart softens and I just think about how my I love his sweet, helpful, willing attitude.  He is just so, so sweet!  I just love him!!  I’m saving this post for someday when he’s 15 and I can remind him of how much he loves to help me!
