Well, today was the big day! Preston is officially a kindergartener! Wow! Where does the time go? It seems like Preston should still be my little toddler, and now’s he’s left the nest (for 2 1/2 hours a day at least :>). He was pretty excited to go – a little nervous, but excited too. I, on the other hand, was sad to send him off. He’s been my sweet little buddy, always with me, for 5 years now, and I just love having him home with me. I’m sad that he won’t be with me all day anymore. But I’m glad that he’s growing up so well, and I’m excited for him to have all the fun experiences that school brings. He’ll do great – no doubt about it!
Mike went into work late today so that he could come with us to take Preston to his first day of school. And he started the day off right by making Preston a special apple shaped pancake to celebrate the first day of school. He told Pres he could either eat it or take it to the teacher – his choice! :> Pres ate it!

Then after breakfast (and after debating with Zach about his clothes all morning – stubborn boy! Almost as stubborn as his mom!), we set off for school in the rain. When we got to school Zach had to be all big and didn’t want to wait with us – he wanted to just go get in his line. Too big! So Mike, Preston, Kyle, and I went to take Preston to his class! We watched him get his name tag, hang up his stuff, find his place on the rug, and then we said farewell and left him to his very nervous first year teacher, Miss Ward. I think she was probably as nervous as the kids, but I think she’s going to be great! Yes, we are silly poperatzee parents that take pictures of everything, and we love it! :>

Two and a half hours later we went back to get him! He seemed exhausted, but he had a great time! Kyle was very confused as to why we got Preston, but didn’t get Zach. It’s going to take some getting used to for Ky! Here are some of the highlights of Preston’s day:
- There was a whole lot of “criss cross applesauce” all day! “We were always sitting on the floor!”
- He was excited to have an assembly on his first day, and is now excited to sell Happenings Books!
- He said, “We spent most of the day on the rug, in the assembly, at recess, and we only sat at our tables to do one tracing paper! I definitely need more work! Definitely more work!”
- He had so much fun playing with Alec Ardizzone at recess! Thanks goodness that he has Alec and Esther Owens in his class! Instant friends!
- He got to wear his matching Clone Wars shoes and backpack!
So here we go – on an awesome adventure!! Tonight he gets to choose his special back to school dinner, and he chose mac-and-cheese (the homemade kind). Should be yummy! Here’s a first day of kindergarten poem that I love!
First Day of Kindergarten
He started school this morning,
And he seemed so very small.
As I walked there beside him
In the Kindergarten hall.
And as he took his place beside
the others in the class,
I realized how all too soon
Those first few years can pass.
Remembering, I saw him as
He first learned how to walk.
The words that we alone made out
When he began to talk.
This little boy so much absorbed
In learning how to write.
It seems as though he must have grown
To boyhood overnight.
My eyes were blurred but hastily
I brushed the tears away
Lest by some word or sign of mine
I mar his first big day.
Oh how I longed to stay with him
And keep him by the hand
To lead him through the places
That he couldn’t understand.
And something closely kin to fear
Was mingled with my pride.
I knew he would no longer be
A baby by my side.
But he must have his chance to live,
To work his problems out,
The privilege to grow and learn
What life is all about.
And I must share my little boy
With friends and work and play;
He’s not a baby anymore –
He’s in Kindergarten today.
